MEMORANDUM

To : All Brothers in the Mighty Sixth District
From : District Representative Bro. Dr. Octavio Miro
Re : Sixth District Policy on Wrecking (Click for Link to Download)
Date : Retroactive to January 1, 2009

PURPOSE:

To implement a written policy within the Mighty Sixth District which specifically prohibits interaction between Brothers in the form of physical or verbal confrontation, by consent or otherwise, which is commonly referred to as “wrecking,” “going to the grass,” “going to the green,” or similar categorizations. With respect to this policy, all such prohibited conduct will be referred to collectively as “wrecking.”

ISSUE:

Unfortunately, some Brothers choose to resolve differences by physical or verbal confrontation. This is sometimes done by consent, but more often it occurs as a form of dispute resolution. This practice is unacceptable and must be curtailed and eliminated. This practice will eventually and inevitably lead to serious permanent injury to or death of a Brother.

APPLICABLE RULES:

Pursuant to the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Member Code of Conduct an Disciplinary Policy (“Code of Conduct”), the following rules are applicable to the practice of “wrecking”:

Chapter 1, Article I: Member Expectations

  1. Members shall be responsible for their own behavior, recognizing that their actions reflect upon themselves, their peers, and occasionally others.
  2. Members shall respect the dignity of all persons and will not physically, mentally, psychologically abuse or haze any human being nor allow themselves to be physically, mentally, psychologically abused or hazed.
  3. Members shall regard, refer, and treat Members and all individuals with civility and respect.
  4. Members shall respect their property and the property of others and will neither abuse nor tolerate the abuse of property.

Chapter 2, Article V: Prescribed Conduct

  1. Conduct – Rules and Regulations:
  2. Any member found to have committed any of the following misconduct (but not limited to misconduct specifically contained herein) is subject to the disciplinary sanctions outlined herein:
  3. Violation of this Member Code of Conduct.
  4. Physical abuse, verbal abuse, threats, intimidation, harassment, coercion and/or other conduct that threatens or endangers the health or safety of any person.
  5. Hazing, defined as an act which endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a person, or which destroys or removes public or private property, for the purpose of initiation, admission into, affiliation with, or as a condition for continued membership in a group or organization. …
  6. Conduct which is disorderly, lewd, or indecent; breach of peace; or aiding, abetting or procuring another person to breach the peace on university premises or at functions sponsored by or participated in by a Chapter, a District or the Fraternity.

POLICY:

Any Brother who engages in conduct that is proscribed by the provisions outlined herein shall be deemed in violation of the Code of Conduct and subject to the penalties articulated therein for such violation to include:

  1. Expulsion
  2. Suspension
  3. Indefinite Period
  4. Definite Period
  5. Probation
  6. Fine
  7. Any other lawful penalty.

Pursuant to this policy, the practice of “wrecking” is specifically prohibited and any

Brother who engages in such misconduct, as determined by the District Representative, will be subject to sanction and penalty as outlined in the Code of Conduct. Any Brother determined to have violated these provisions will be afforded due process in accordance with the Code of Conduct, to include the right to a hearing and the right to an appeal.

This policy is effective immediately, and in any event retroactive to January 1, 2009.

This policy applies to any activity which is subject to the jurisdiction of the Sixth District Representative. Thus, the policy applies to:

  1. Any misconduct which occurs within the bounds of the Mighty Sixth District, to include misconduct perpetrated by Brothers from other Districts who are visiting the Sixth District, irrespective of whether they are affiliated with a Chapter within the Sixth District;
  2. Any misconduct perpetrated by a Brother who is affiliated with a chapter in the Sixth District at the time of the violation, regardless of where the misconduct occurs;

TO:   Brothers of the Mighty Sixth District
FROM:  Brian O. Beverly, Sixth District Representative
RE: Sixth District Social Media Policy
DATE:  September 14, 2014

Brothers,

Reckless use of social media paints the Fraternity in a bad light. It has also proven capable of harming our great Fraternity.  Accordingly, I am implementing a social media policy in the Mighty Sixth District. The policy is designed to provide guidelines for how members of this District use social media when it pertains to Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.  Violations of this policy will subject a Brother to discipline pursuant to the Member Code of Conduct & Disciplinary Policy.

POLICY:

Social media are powerful communication tools that have a significant impact on the District’s organizational and professional reputations. Because there may be a blurring of the lines that separate personal and professional boundaries, the Sixth District has developed this policy to promote and protect the District’s interests on social media. Social media include all platforms designed to disseminate information through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. This policy pertains to all uses of

Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat and any other type of Social Media not listed.

  1. Confidential and Proprietary Information: Do not post confidential or proprietary information about Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., the Sixth District or any c hapter within the Sixth District absent the express written permission of the District Representative. Brothers who post, send, share or otherwise divulge confidential information will be subject to disciplinary action.
  1. Copyright and Fair Use: When posting, be mindful of the copyright and intellectual property rights of others’ materials and those of the Sixth District and the Fraternity. Users who breach copyright and intellectual property rights of others, the Fraternity and/or the Sixth District are subject to disciplinary action.
  1. Use of Fraternal Symbols: Users are to refrain from using the Fraternity’s name, escutcheon, Greek letters, service marks, motto, Cardinal Principles or any other fraternal images or iconography to promote a product, cause, business interest, political party, candidate or in any manner that defames the Sixth District and/or the Fraternity. Users who misuse the Fraternity’s symbols, marks and identifying nomenclature are subject to disciplinary
  1. Personal Responsibility: Web-privacy rarely Therefore, users should ensure that posts promote the integrity of the Fraternity, the Sixth District and its members. Users will identify views as their own. It should be clear that the views expressed are not necessarily those of the Sixth District and/or Fraternity. Posts on social media sites should protect the Fraternity and Sixth District reputations. No user should construe any social media site as representing the Fraternity and/or the Sixth District as a whole. Users who fail to adhere to this standard for personal responsibility do so at the risk of disciplinary action.
  1. Accuracy of Information: Users must ensure accuracy of facts before posting them on social media. Review content for grammatical and spelling errors. This is especially important if posting on behalf of the Sixth District and/or Fraternity in any capacity. We are all college-educated men. Social media posts should be reflective of such.
  1. Respectful Dialogue: Because content posted could elicit comments or discussion of opposing ideas, users should make every effort to ensure that responses are considered carefully in order not to compromise the Sixth District and Fraternity.
  1. Audience: Social media is easily available to a wide range of audiences. Users should ensure that posts will not alienate, harm or provoke members, patrons or our collaborative partners. Consider the reputation of the Fraternity and/or the Sixth District in all
  1. Photography: Users must ensure that all photographs posted generate no cause for criticism of the Fraternity or the Sixth District. All photographs should be in good taste and reflective of the good name and good will enjoyed by the Sixth District and Fraternity. Users are prohibited from posting or otherwise displaying any image that violates the Sixth District’s and/or the Fraternity’s Constitution and Bylaws. Users must avoid photos, feeds and/or videos depicting sexually explicit material, violence, profanity, acting like a canine, drunkenness and/or desecration of other fraternities and sororities. Users who fail to abide by the photography policy are subject to disciplinary action.
  1. Reporting/Reposting: Users must ensure that the Sixth District’s and Fraternity’s reputations are protected at all times. Once a user views a post, feed, video or other social media that is a violation of this policy, the users must report the matter to the Sixth District immediately. Users must not repost or share any post, feed, video and/or other social media that is a violation of this policy. Users who fail to abide by this policy do so at the risk of disciplinary action.
